First Night® New Bern 2010 will be the opening event for The City of New Bern's 300th Anniversary Celebration. First Night® is an international celebration held in over 100 downtowns every New Year's Eve. It is arts-based and family oriented. New Bern First Night® will include over 30 sites for entertainment - many free events, some requiring purchase of a button for admission.


Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation

DATE: 1/2/10 - 1/6/10

LOCATION: New Bern Library

The "Forever Free" traveling exhibit will be on display in the auditorium at New Bern-Craven County Public Library. "Forever Free" examines President Lincoln's thoughts about slavery throughout his political career and the conditions which led to the Emancipation Proclamation. It traces Abraham Lincoln's gradual transformation from an antislavery moderate into "The Great Emancipator," who freed all slaves with a revolutionary war-time proclamation in 1863.

"Forever Free" is organized by the Untington Library and The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in cooperation with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. it is made possible through major grants from the national Endowment for the Humanities and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.


William Henry Singleton's Recollections of My Slavery Days: A North carolina Slave's View of the Civil War and its Legacies

This is the concluding event for the Exhibit "Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation" held at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library.

In 1922, the former slave and Union Army veteran, William Henry Singleton, published an autobiography that provides a fascinating glimpse of life in a North Carolina coastal city and rural neighborhood. Katherine Mellon Charron, Assistant Professor of History at North Carolina, explores what Singleton's narrative reveals about a place and the people in it, about slavery and freedom, and the bridge between the two. This program is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities..

Annual Shrine Winter Ceremonial & Parade

About 2,500 Sudan Shriners and families are to be in New Bern the weekend of the Annual Winter Ceremonial, highlighted publicly with Saturday’s annual Shriner’s parade. The noon parade begins on George Street, with 47 units moving through downtown. It is always a colorful and lively event, with traditional Shriner units such as the motor patrol, mini rigs, mini choppers and mini cars, along with the drum and bugle corps, keystone kops and mourners.

This Civil War weekend will concentrate on a reenactment of Camp Armory at the New Bern Academy. Living history presentations, games, and programs throughout the weekend will highlight life in Civil War-era New Bern. Living history programs, encampments, and the reopening of the New Bern Academy as a Civil War museum, will be scheduled. Programs will be included in regular ticketed admission.

Opening of the Bern - New Bern Exhibit

    Coastal Christmas Flotilla

    New Bern Parks and Recreation is proud to host the annual Coastal Christmas Flotilla! Join us for a magical evening of bright lights, beautiful boats and music. The Marine Corps Band will play while the boats are parading down the river. Santa will hitch a ride aboard “The Hatterascal” to greet the children in Union Point Park.

    Christmas Candlelights

    Experience an eighteenth-century candlelit Christmas celebration! The Evening program includes a tour through the Palace (and perhaps a word or two with the governor), performances by Tryon Palace's Fife and Drum Corps and Jonkonnu troupe, and an assortment of other performers. The evening ends with a grand illumination over the South Lawn.
