Paddles & Pints: Group Kayak Paddle & Wildlife Watching
April 28 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
In celebration of #NCBeerMonth & Earth Day 2018, The New Village Brewery is teaming up with our good friends Bill Hines & Larry Summers of Paddling in Pamlico to organize a Paddles & Pints event.
Paddlers will meet at the Oriental Wildlife Boat Ramp (at the foot of the Oriental Bridge) between 10:00-10:15am, and launch for a leisurely 2-3 hour paddle on Green’s and Smith Creek. All experience levels are welcome.
When: Saturday, April 28, 2018
Meet: 10:00am, launch 10:30 am
Where: Oriental Boat Ramp
301 Midyette St. Oriental, NC 28571
Paddle Distance: Approximately 2-4 miles
Duration: 1-3 hours on water, including lunch
Trip Difficulty: Easy – moderate due to distance, wind. All paddlers will start together and go up Smith Creek for a short 1 hour paddle. The group will then round back and drop off those who wish to stop and the rest will head up Green’s Creek for a longer paddle.
Skill Requirements: Beginner – intermediate due to distance, wind. Paddlers must be at least age 10 to be in a kayak by themselves. Ages 10-14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in another boat. One or more tandem kayaks are available that could take a child age 6 & up with a parent/guardian in the boat. (Children must have their own life vest).
Trip details: Meet at Oriental boat ramp at 10:00am. After a brief safety huddle, launch 10:30 to explore Smith & Green’s Creeks, and the abundant winged wildlife. There is a grassy area where the group will stop, stretch and have lunch.
Bring a snack or lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars and bug spray. Life vests will be abailable if needed with a signed waiver.
***TYPE II OR III Personal Flotation Device (PFD) MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON WATER***
Equipment (kayaks, paddles, vests) can be borrowed in exchange for donations to Sound Rivers of $10 per paddler. Checks may be made out to Sound Rivers.
Registration fee is $5 (plus a donation of $10 if borrowing equipment) and includes experienced local guides, instruction as needed, and one brew of your choice after the paddle at the Brewery. The event concludes at a BBQ fundraiser for Sound Rivers in the New Village Brewery beer garden from 4pm to 7pm.
