First performed in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest is a timeless classic loved by many as one of the funniest plays ever written, with dazzling, dizzying dialogue. The beguiling characters – Algernon and Jack, Cecily and Gwendolen, Lady Bracknell and Miss Prism – endure across time as some of the wittiest and silliest stage characters ever created.
Oscar Wilde’s witty comedy of manners and mistaken identity in 1890s England has entertained theater audiences throughout the years. Its high farce and brilliant dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest an enduringly popular play. In addition, it has captivated comedy filmmakers six times between 1932 and 2011.
