DESCRIPTION:Jazz Up Your Valentine’s Day with the Karla Harris Quartet \nCaptivating audiences for more than three decades\, jazz vocalist Karla Harris “takes the stage by storm and doesn’t let go till it’s all over” says one fan! “Rich\, full-bodied and with a slight buttery finish\, Karla Harris has mad skills – a vocal artist with impeccable phrasing” says another. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the one you love than with the Karla Harris Quartet when they take the stage with “Love in the Key of Swing” at the Old Theater on Friday\, February 14\, at 7:30 pm\, presented by the Pamlico Musical Society! \nKarla’s art lies not only in expansive vocals but also in tapping into the emotion of a tune and delivering it fully. Bringing dynamic diversity and sophisticated nuance to the music\, she remains respectful of a song’s roots. Her love for singing started first with a love for words and the power of their expression. As a young girl growing up in the suburbs west of St. Louis\, she often spent time writing little stories and performing at family gatherings. In college\, Karla began singing with the venerable St. Louis band\, Gateway Jazz Ensemble\, which featured beloved jazz vocalist Jeanne Trevor\, an early mentor. Soon she began working with other top groups in her hometown and then as lead vocalist in internationally acclaimed combos. Her music credits are vast\, with stints at many of the nation’s premier jazz festivals\, the Kennedy Center’s Arts Across America series\, a distinguished 2022 South Arts Jazz Road grant – even a TED Talk. DESCRIPTION:Come out to the Beach Access (bathhouse) parking lot at Fort Macon and join us for a night of astronomy. Ranger Paul Terry will discuss the night sky and we will have telescopes set up for viewing the heavens. This is a clear weather event and may be canceled due to rain or heavy cloud cover. If you have a telescope feel free to bring it. No pets please.\nUnless you have someone with true mobility issues\, we ask that you park in the first parking lot when you enter area (the lot West of the Bathhouse) then walk over to the program area in the East lot. We hope this will help prevent people being blinded by headlights as people leave.\n***PLEASE NOTE!!! We have had some issues with times posted for some of our events recently. The start time for this event is 5:30PM. If you wish to attend the event\, we suggest showing up at or before the posted start time rather than towards the end. We will only stay as long as there are guests. We can not guarantee that the event will last for the entire listed duration or that we will even be present. The park closes at 5:30PM\, which includes the beach. We have permission to use the property specifically for this event and only for this event. This is not an open invitation to go to the beach. The first run starts at 8p\, the second around 11:30p and in recent years has had not one but two dragons as the Chinese dragon joins in on the late run. Bring pots\, bring pans: make your own music for the dragon. \nAfter the end of that second dragon run\, stick around the Hodges Street waterfront just a few minutes more: at midnight\, the Oriental Croaker will drop at Town Dock to welcome in the new year.
